Details and caveats of basic rules in math. Can you divide by a negative number?
I heard just now, I do not know if it's true or not, this division by a negative is "technically" not allowed. Mathematically, you need to change the factor negative (-1) in the denominator to the numerator before dividing. Her algebraically the exact same thing and produces the same result … can get away with not even consciously think about it. But the rule exists because it issues in higher level mathematics as number theory and I know yet. Is this true? What rules of mathematics actually say about this … on division by negative values? Also, what other warnings apply to mathematics odd that people often think to exclude but can easily get away with ignoring?
Division a negative number is certainly allowed: 6 / (-2) = -3 This is the same thing to say (-6) / 2 = -3, but neither form is more correct than the other. The reason is that multiplication is commutative: (-2) * (3) is the same as (2) * (-3). They both equal (-6).
