
What are good books to teach myself the mathematical modeling?
I have a minor in mathematics, but I improve my skills – suggestions?
Well, This is not an easy question, because the act of modeling can take place in almost any setting applied mathematics. Personally, I do not suggest a book for you, but I have some things you might want to think about: In general, you will find interesting problems that drive you deeper into the areas mathematics that you already know something. You learn a lot in the process, but it is good to have a solid starting point. Is there a course or a topic you'd like to explore? If so, you may want to find a manual for this course which focuses on modeling. For example, I know you can find good books on modeling for the two equations or differential calculus. Another thing to consider is your comfort level with mathematical calculation (and your math software available). You'll probably need to do at least part of the calculation, regardless, to learn a lot about modeling. However, some books will require enough depth computer skills. So when you look at the books you might want to check if the level of calculation is wherever you want. Finally, you may want to think about what type of applications you're most interested in. You can probably find a lot of books modeling with a specialization in biology, environment, finance or engineering. There are books geared toward these specific areas – So if you're really interested in a specific area, you might want to get a book of modeling related. So I not really helped, but maybe I have given you some things to think about. There are many books out there simply titled "Mathematical Modeling", or something like that. Most are for use in a mathematics course of undergraduate, and most would probably be a good starting place if you do no definitive answers to the questions above. I have not actually read, but I know that the MAA produced a book modeling, and their books are usually high quality and accessible to a wider audience. One last thing: If your in or near a university, spend some time flipping through the pages of books in the library before spending money on a book. Good Luck!
